Waxing Woes

Girl with fake mustacheWhen I was a kid, probably 10 or 11, my mom and I were at the pool. I was splashing around having a grand time and out of the blue she said, “Would you like to get your mustache waxed?” For the record, I’m female. So I was like, “Ok if she’s asking that it probably means I should.” So I agreed, and asked if I could also get an area on my chest waxed as well. She agreed and the next week we went to a salon.

I remember the lady being pretty friendly. She put the hot wax on my upper lip and my chest and laid a cloth strip on top of it. She ripped it off, which hurt, but I had been prepared for that. She then put the same strip she had used back on and ripped it off again. She repeated this process probably 5 times. When I left, my upper lip and area on my chest were raw. I couldn’t wear a bra for 4 days. It was traumatic.

When I got older I was so afraid of waxing that I used Nair on my upper lip. Word to the wise, never use Nair on your upper lip. I also had (who are we kidding, I still do) caterpillar like eyebrows. I noticed other girls having nice, shaped eyebrows and I wanted to be part of that club, so I sucked it up and decided to get my eyebrows waxed. It wasn’t nearly as bad as last time, and I was incredibly pleased with the result. I’ve been hooked ever since.

Then I started working at the spa. Brandyn, our esthetician, offered to do my eyebrows for me. She has her own waxing room, which is incredible. I’m used to sitting in a beat up office chair in the corner of the salon. She uses this blue, hard wax. With this type, you don’t need the cloth strips. She told me this is better for your skin because this wax adheres only to the hair, not your skin. It also doesn’t leave cloth residue, which is annoying.

I’ve got to say, it was the least painful eyebrow wax I’ve ever had. My skin lost the classic redish post wax hue way more quickly than usual, and it seems to me that the results have lasted longer. I haven’t had to get a wax in almost 3 weeks. Brandyn is amazing, her miracle hard wax is amazing, and I highly recommend both.
